Once a booming coal mining town Scranton (population 700) is now a small, “bedroom” community located fifteen miles south of Topeka on the Santa Fe Trail (US Hwy 56).  Scranton is surrounded by assiduous farm land. It’s a small town environment with the convenience of the “city” just a short drive away.

The Scranton Attendance center is currently the home to the Santa Fe Trail District office and the Santa Fe Trail Preschool which offers morning and afternoon sessions for children 3-4 years of age.

Scranton is home to three local churches, The CrossRoad Church, A Place Called There and Saint Patrick Catholic Church. All have weekly services/mass that also include a variety of activities some of which are Sunday school classes, adult bible studies, vacation bible school and youth groups.

The business district accommodates a convenience store, bank, restaurant/ bar, post office, telephone company,  tire/auto repair shop, auto sales, car wash,  storage units, classic car restoration, fire department, city maintenance shop, and the city municipal offices.

The community is made up primarily of single family housing, several rental properties, two mobile home parks and an income based apartment complex for the aging and disabled.

Whether you are looking for a quite place to retire or a family oriented community to raise a family, Scranton is the place for you!
